December 2006 We would like to wish all our visitors a very happy Christmas and a prosperous 2007.
September 2006 The phenomenon of "El Nino" appears to be happening this year.
Let me explain what El Nino is. The normal trade winds that cross the Pacific ocean in a westerly direction mean that the water level in the west ( Indonesia ) is about 1/2 meter higher than in the east (Peru). This means that the water is cooler in the South American area... due to deeper cold water welling up. The surface temperature is normally 8 degrees warmer in the Asia side due to the winds blowing the warmer surface water over there.
During El Nino, the trade winds are less strong in the west and central Pacific, therefore the water temperature around South America rises and this in turn causes various side effects. First, greater rainfall - this particularly effects Northern Coastal Peru. Second effect is a change in the fishing industry as there is a reduced supply of food for the fish as it comes in the cooler waters... so less fish. It also means a longer summer for Peru, hence now in September 2006 its slightly warmer than normal in Lima.
El Nino effects many countries around the Pacific rim and beyond.
June 2006 Alan Garcia will be the next President of Peru. After a bitter campaign, the leader of the APRA party, Alan Garcia has won the second round election.
May 2006 A small note about the location of the airport and the weather. Lima Jorge Chavez Airport is located in Callao, close to the ocean. This means it is very subject to the winter coastal fog. This sometimes interferes with flight operations. For example today, all the late night and early morning arrivals were diverted or delayed. There isn't much anyone can do about the weather, but be aware it could happen during the months of May through to September. The fog normally burns off by mid morning.
May 2006 New lines found on the Nazca Plateau. A team of Japanese researchers from Yamagata University have found a new figure drawn on the southern part of the Nazca Plateau. It is 65m long and seems to depict a horned animal. It is thought it was drawn as a symbol of hope for good crops.

April 2006 The elections are certain to go into a second round, with the 2 most popular candidates going head to head. Ollanta Humala and Alan Garcia will face off in late May. The exact date has yet to be confirmed.
April 2006 A little more about the climate in Lima. Winter runs from May to October. During this time it is cloudy and cool. Due to the mist from the ocean, it can feel cold.
March 2006 Average rainfall chart for Lima. As you can see Lima is one of the world's driest cities.

July 2005 A little information about the winter on Peru's coast. Winter runs from June to September on the coast, with cloud and high humidity. Temperatures in Lima average 18 by day and 14 by night. It can however feel colder, with the humidity.
The weather is pretty localised, and although you could drive several hundred kilometers north or south of Lima and still be in exactly the same weather, you can drive 10km inland and be in warm sunshine.

June 2004, The Inca Trail
The Peruvian government is limiting the number of people on the trail to 500 per day, in order to try and protect the environment.
This means you will need to book early. See the Sample Tours section for the cost.
Also they have restricted the sale of bottled drinks along the trail for the same reasons. I guess they are trying to prevent the problem that occurred in Nepal.. the Coca Cola bottle trail.. rubbish littering the area.
What this means is that you need to carry a good water canteen with you, and the porters will provide you with boiled water to refill.
